Brown Chorotega Pottery Mug

The Chorotega are one of Costa Rica’s native tribes who have preserved their pre-columbian legacy of artisan pottery through generations. These mugs are made from sacred clay near Guatil, Guanacaste. The pottery wheel is spun by hand, giving each piece unique characteristics. The mugs are then cured in wood-burning dome kilns. The mugs are slightly porous and will sweat until cured through repetitive use. They will also carry an earthy flavor until cured through repetitive use. They are delicate and should be hand-washed with a soft sponge. In the United States, we have not undertaken efforts to have these mugs approved as food-safe for consumption. They probably would not pass food-safe governmental regulations, Thus, these artisan mugs are offered in the USA for decorative purposes only. Local Art by Gerardo, Andy, and Luis at Caudeg in Guatil, Costa Rica.
